Magnolia Scale has been spotted all over the county, below is some more information on what it is and how to treat it.
- Scale is an insect that sucks fluid from plants causing yellowing leaves, weak branches, and in severe cases plant death.
- As they feed, they secret a sticky honeydew that can sometimes produce a moldy look (see picture) and can also attract other insects.
TREATMENT: at this stage we suggest using a horticultural oil for control. Multiple applications will likely be necessary through fall to continue to control the crawlers as they hatch. Once control has been established, new growth from the plant should have a healthier appearance!
